Engagement Rings Vs. Wedding Rings: What's the Difference?

If you’re shopping for rings, it’s easy to wonder: are engagement rings and wedding rings (or bands) the same? Though the terms are often used fairly interchangeably, they represent different parts of a wedding journey.

At Ethan Lord Jewelers, we help couples in Chicago design both custom  engagement rings and wedding rings that reflect their relationship. Here’s everything you might want to know about how these rings differ, when you would wear them, and if you really need both.

Are Engagement Rings and Wedding Rings the Same?

Not exactly. While both in theory symbolize love and commitment, the timing of when you receive them and their significance differs.

An engagement ring is typically given during a “proposal.” It’s a promise of marriage and often designed with a diamond or gemstone.

A wedding ring (or wedding band) is exchanged during the marriage ceremony. It represents unity and the formal bond of marriage, usually a simpler band that complements the engagement ring.

When Are Engagement Rings and Wedding Rings Exchanged?

Traditionally, the engagement ring comes first, given when one partner proposes. The wedding band is exchanged later, during the wedding ceremony, when vows are made.

After the ceremony, most people wear both rings together on the left-hand ring finger, placing the wedding band closest to the heart and the engagement ring above it. But how you wear your wedding band is entirely up to you!

Do You Need Both an Engagement Ring and a Wedding Ring?

Not necessarily. While many couples love the symbolism of wearing both, others prefer simplicity and choose just one ring.

You can absolutely use your engagement ring as your wedding ring if that feels right for you. Some couples even design a hybrid ring, a single piece that combines the sparkle of an engagement ring with the meaning of a wedding band.

At Ethan Lord, we specialize in custom jewelry crafted right here in Chicago, so you can create one ring (or two) that perfectly represents your love story!

Engagement Ring vs. Wedding Band: Design and Price Differences

Engagement rings often feature a center stone (commonly a diamond or colored gemstone) set in precious metal. Because of the materials and craftsmanship involved, they tend to be more expensive than wedding bands.

Wedding bands are usually simpler: metal-only designs or smaller accent diamonds that complement the engagement ring. However, many couples are now exploring unique textures, mixed metals, and lab-grown diamonds for modern wedding bands that still carry meaning.

Do Men Wear Engagement Rings?

While engagement rings are traditionally associated with women, more men are choosing to wear them too. It’s a growing trend among couples who value equality and shared symbolism.

Can You Wear Your Rings in a Different Order, or on a Different Hand?

Absolutely. While Western tradition favors the left hand, many cultures wear wedding rings on the right hand, and modern couples often choose what feels most natural.

Some people even switch their engagement ring to the right hand after the ceremony, keeping their wedding band solo on the left. The choice is entirely personal, and there’s no “wrong” way to wear your symbols of love. How you wear your wedding band is entirely up to you!

Engagement Ring vs. Promise Ring: What’s the Difference?

A promise ring comes before an engagement, it represents commitment, but not yet a formal intent to marry. Engagement rings, on the other hand, symbolize that marriage is the next step.

If you’re considering one, it’s worth discussing your ideas with your partner to ensure your rings carry the same meaning.

Your rings are more than jewelry, they’re a reflection of your story, your style, and your promise. Whether you choose an engagement ring, a wedding band, or both, what matters most is that it feels right for you.
