A Little Jewelers Row History

Jewelers Row has been a Chicago attraction and center of the city’s jewelry trade for over a century. Landmark Jewelers Row buildings started going up in the late 1800s and were built mainly around the intersection of Madison and Wabash Aves. Famed architects such as Sullivan, Graham, and Burnham have all contributed to the rich landscape. Take a quick stroll down Wabash, and you’ll spot buildings designed in the Art Deco, Chicago School, Italianate, and  other architectural styles.

We’re fortunate to be in the Mallers Building (also known as the Jewelers Center), a 1921 Art Deco destination in the heart of Jewelers Row Chicago. Our central location gives us a serious advantage in terms of access to diamonds, gems, custom jewelry design, and world-class jewelry manufacturing. But besides being embedded in the Chicago jewelry industry, the area features lots of perks and things to do.

Eating and Drinking Around Your Chicago Wedding Ring Search

The Jewelers Row area has plenty to offer. It’s close to attractions such as Millennium Park and renowned theatres, trendy venues like Cindy’s at the Chicago Athletic Club, and many popular restaurants and bars. Chicago historical landmarks are around every corner, such as the Cloud Gate sculpture (ahem, AKA The Bean), the Riverwalk, Calder’s Flamingo, and the Cultural Center.

As we  write this, coronavirus has had a huge impact on the city (and world), and some activities and businesses may not be available. Check before you go. Here are a few tips to keep energized while visiting Jewelers Row stores and choosing the perfect wedding bands.

Coffee and Treats

  • Goddess and the Baker:
Hands-down one of the cutest and most delicious coffee shops in the Loop. They’ve got delicious small bites including vegan options, and the most dynamite cakes and goodies. And who cares if Avocado Toast is cliché by now; theirs is the BEST with crusty bread and kicky red pepper flakes.

  • Hero Coffee:
It’s tucked away in a romantic alley across from DePaul University a few blocks to the south, so don’t blink or you’ll miss it. Grab a delicious pastry and one of their lavender lattes for a tasty treat to celebrate finding the perfect wedding rings on Jewelers Row. YUM.

Lunch

  • Pittsfield Cafe:
Inside the landmark Pittsfield Building - which at the time of its completion in 1927 was the tallest in Chicago - the Pittsfield Cafe serves up delicious meals with an unpretentious vibe. Grab a seat at the counter for old-school diner feel. Employees from all Jewelers Row stores know and love this establishment.

  • The Gage:
For a cocktail, glass of wine, and a more upscale experience. Try it for brunch, plus they’ve got sidewalk dining on Michigan Ave.

Drinks

  • Cerise at the Virgin Hotel:
A trendy but comfy rooftop bar with great views of the city. Perfect for Instagramming swoon-worthy shots of your wedding rings. Cerise gets high marks for delicious food and excellent service.

  • Millers Pub:
A famous neighborhood favorite. Get a beer and a burger with locals and visitors, and enjoy a casual meal at this beloved Chicago institution.

  • Ethan Lord Jewelers:
Just kidding, sort of. We do have a large and newly renovated 8” bar,  where you can sit back, have a drink, and relax after your busy day on Chicago’s Jewelers Row.

Getting the Best Custom Wedding Bands in Chicago

When shopping for wedding bands, consider custom jewelry. Chicago has top-notch jewelry store options to explore and talented jewelry designers to check out.  Because so much of the jewelry is made on site, you can work with a pro to get the exact wedding bands you want.

A few pointers for custom designing your wedding bands on Jewelers Row:

  • Collect pictures online for inspiration. You’ll be able to share with your jeweler and better communicate your dream ring design.

  • Consider engraving the inside of your bands — or even adding tiny birthstones —  for true personalization.

  • Make an appointment. This way, your jeweler will be sure to have time to sit down with you and really understand what you’re looking for in the perfect wedding rings.

  • Wear your engagement ring when you're trying on bands. You'll want to be sure that you love the look of them next to one another.
  • Give yourself some time. The custom process typically takes 3-4 weeks, plus any additional time you’ll need to decide on design. Don’t wait until the last minute before your wedding, so you won’t be stressed over timing.
