At Ethan Lord, our sapphires are ethically sourced from Sri Lanka, where gemstones have been mined for more than two centuries. Small independent groups, known as the karahaula, have relied on traditional mining practices that have been employed for thousands of years. When a mine is depleted, the shaft is filled and returns to a paddy (rice) field within a week. This method of mining is ecologically friendly and also maximizes the use of the land.
Once the sapphires are sourced, they are then fashioned with the very latest cutting methods by a third generation cutter in Colombo, Sri Lanka. With the cutting technique and materials used, this avoids color inconsistencies and blank spots. The cutter only selects the "rough" crystals that will produce the gem color and clarity that we demand. This selection process eliminates more than 99.99% of the production of most mines and guarantees that the quality control of our gemstones begins at the source.
In order to ensure the rich color desired, all of our sapphires are modeled after a master template. This allows the ability to consistently provide the ideal blue, yellow, and pink tones, hues, and saturation. Our sapphire colors are the highly desired deep royal blue, “bubble gum” pink, and rich golden yellow.
At Ethan Lord, quality is key.
